The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) - the apex body of technical and management educational institutes in the country will soon constitute a new accreditation body - the Indian Board of Accreditation (IBA).
"IBA will have functions and objectives identical to the existing National Board of Accreditation (NBA). There is a need to form this new accreditation body in view of the rapidly growing volume of work with us," said AICTE chairman S S Mantha here on Sunday. Mantha is an alumni of MSU's Faculty of Technology and Engineering and studied at the university between 1972 and 1977. He was in the city for the alumni meet.
The new accreditation body is being set up at a time when the human resource development (HRD) ministry is planning to make accreditation for all higher educational institutions in the country mandatory.
"This step is to build our capacity," said Mantha, adding that in coming years, IBA will follow the best practices of different countries and come out with new methodologies of evaluation.
At present, programmes are accredited by NBA which was set up by AICTE in 1994, to assess qualitative competence of educational institutions starting from the diploma level to the post graduate level in streams of engineering and technology, architecture, management and pharmacy.
"IBA, too, will assess the quality of educational institutes keeping in mind global practices," he said.
This year, the apex body of technical education, has received only 120 new applications from educational institutes, so far. This is in complete contrast to the 2,000 new applications that it had received in 2008-09.
"This means that there is a consolidation happening. Quality will prevail as there is a corrective mechanism within the system. When purely business models are followed, business ethics too will come into play," said Mantha, adding that if last year, 90 colleges across the country closed down, 200 new opened up.
"This year, the good trend that we are noticing is that of the 120 applications that we have received, 65 are for starting polytechnic colleges," he said.
