Mentoring - First Interview - Article 8

In this virtual world, physical contact with my mentees is usually limited.  I therefore use the following as a questionnaire which I share with the Mentee by mail, whatsapp and they take their time to respond to these First interview questions.

These questions can provide a quick way to break the ice in an early mentoring meeting (with thanks to the Independent newspaper).

The answers don’t have to be written down/ they can be typewritten :)  – this is to create conversation. Both mentee and mentor can answer:

  1. If you weren’t talking to me right now you’d be ...
  2. A phrase you use far too often is ...
  3. You wish people would take more notice of ...
  4. The most surprising thing that happened to you was ...
  5.  A common misconception (idea) of you is ...
  6. You are not a politician, but ...
  7. You are good at...
  8. You are very not good at...
  9. The best day / night out is ...
  10. The best age to be is ...
  11. In a nutshell, your philosophy is ...
  12. You light up when...
Simple questions. No judgement is passed, nor it is expected.  It helps the understanding process. The better we understand each other - it helps the future dialogue/ communications to be clearer and precise.

The ABC or 3 Keys to Communications I learnt early are -
Accuracy
Brevity
Clarity.
